Historic Location, Updated for Modern Business
The Grist Mill on Hop Brook functioned as a working mill for over 270 years. Joseph Toy, of the Toy-Bickford Co., added the east wing to the building in 1864. There, the company would spin hemp, which was used in the safety fuses for manufacturing explosives. R.H. Ensign established it as a jute yarn factory; however, after his death it returned to being a mill.
The mill ceased operation in the late 1950s. It was renovated in the mid-1980s and has operated as both a restaurant and office space since 1985. Today, it offers a one-of a-kind location within a thriving, upscale community. It’s surrounded by a quintessential New England town. But it has all the trappings to conduct business, including proximity to a Starbucks and a French Bistro.
